The Practice CLARITY Institute

The Practice CLARITY Institute exists to support professionals who make complex safeguarding decisions.

Safeguarding practice often requires practitioners to analyse uncertain information, weigh risks, and make decisions that have profound consequences for children and families. These decisions must be both thoughtful and transparent.

The Institute was created to support clearer thinking in safeguarding practice.

Through frameworks, tools, research, and professional development, the Practice CLARITY Institute aims to help practitioners organise information, analyse risk more effectively, and strengthen professional judgement.

Our Purpose

Safeguarding work is rarely straightforward.

Professionals must bring together information from multiple sources, consider potential harm, recognise protective factors, and anticipate how situations may change over time.

The purpose of the Practice CLARITY Institute is to support this complex thinking.

We aim to:

• provide practical frameworks that support safeguarding analysis
• develop tools that help practitioners organise and interpret information
• support reflective professional judgement
• promote clearer reasoning in safeguarding decision-making

Our work focuses on helping professionals think more clearly when situations are uncertain or complex.

Supporting Safeguarding Practice

The Institute develops resources designed to support professionals working across safeguarding environments, including:

• child protection
• social work practice
• education safeguarding
• health services
• multi-agency safeguarding partnerships

Our resources include practical tools, professional guidance, training materials, and reflective learning opportunities.

These resources are designed to help practitioners strengthen their analytical thinking and make more confident safeguarding decisions.

A Commitment to Clear Thinking

Safeguarding decisions can have lasting consequences for children and families.

The Practice CLARITY Institute believes that the quality of those decisions depends on the clarity of the thinking behind them.

Our work is guided by a simple aim:

to support professionals in thinking clearly, analysing carefully, and making better safeguarding decisions.

The CLARITY Framework

At the centre of the Institute’s work is the CLARITY Framework.

The CLARITY Framework provides a structured approach to analysing safeguarding situations by examining seven domains commonly present in safeguarding assessments.

These domains include:

• Concerns
• Likelihood
• Assets
• Risk Scenario
• Impact
• Trajectory
• You (professional judgement)

Together these domains form the CLARITY Wheel, which helps practitioners consider the full safeguarding picture rather than focusing on only one aspect of a situation.

The framework does not replace professional judgement. Instead, it supports practitioners by organising the reasoning behind their decisions.

Training and Learning

The Practice CLARITY Institute also provides training and learning opportunities for professionals who want to deepen their understanding of safeguarding analysis.

Training may include:

• workshops on the CLARITY Framework
• safeguarding risk analysis tools
• professional judgement and decision-making
• reflective safeguarding practice

These learning opportunities are designed to support professionals at different stages of their safeguarding careers.
